Nuestro carnaval

Montevideo es una ciudad religiosamente carnavalera. Todo el año es carnaval, dicen, y en la bella y mansa bahía se cumple. Más de cuarenta días vive el dios Momo en ella, sus fiestas son varias: las elección de reinas; el Desfile Inaugural, desfiles barriales participativos; el Desfile de Llamadas (de tambores de candombe); el Concurso Oficial de Agrupaciones; los tablados a lo largo de la ciudad donde diferentes conjuntos se presentan cada noche. Allí se pueden disfrutar espectáculos de humoristas, parodistas, lubolos, revistas y murgas. Todos son géneros artísticos que han tomado forma autóctona en el trajín del carnaval montevideano.

Montevideo religiously loves carnival. “The whole year is a carnival”, so the saying goes, and it comes true amidst the serene beauty of the city’s bay. Momo, the carnival god, dwells there for more than forty days of varied festivities: the election of Queens and Princesses, parades and candombe drums calls, the Official Awards Competition and nightly performances by carnival ensembles on open stages scattered throughout the city. Different artistic genres display their shows there for public enjoyment: humourists, parodists, lubolos, revues, murgas. Along its restless course, the Montevidean carnival gave them all a unique, distinctive character.
